Is There Anything Wrong with My Child?

Is There Anything Wrong with My Child?

As parents, you would probably know your child better than anyone else and observed the side of them that others might not have the chance to see. However, sometimes certain behaviours and milestones might be important warning signs that you should pay attention to as they could be early signs and symptoms of delay and certain conditions. Of course, it is always essential that you keep a close eye on  your child’s development throughout to avoid any misinterpretations.

Keeping an eye on your child’s development and milestones.

Apart from physical milestones such as crawling, sitting and walking etc., it is important to keep track of your child’s social, emotional and cognitive milestones too. While delays in milestones do not necessarily point to developmental issues, they could serve as an early indication of heightened risk and parents should keep a closer eye on their child’s progress.

Seek professional advice if you are concerned.

While it is very common to expect variation among every child, as every child achieves his / her milestones at a different pace, developmental milestones serve as a general guideline of checkpoints in a child’s development. Therefore, knowing the developmental milestones across different stages of a child’s growth help parents, teachers as well as healthcare professionals in the identification of potential problems with delayed development or neurodevelopmental disorders such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) etc.

If your child has not been hitting milestones for his or her age, and you are concerned, it is always a good idea to consult or seek advices from a professional such as a clinical psychologist or a paediatrician.

Don’t accept the wait-and-see approach.

Some children do hit their developmental milestones at a slower pace but it is quite unlikely for a developmentally delayed child to simply outgrow their problems without any interventions. In this case, the “Don’t worry, we shall wait-and-see” approach is probably the last thing you would want to do. To develop necessary skills involved in the aspects of delay, your child will need extra help and targeted interventions.
